Perhaps it is the fact that I practice Yoga and have an interest in Buddhism which directs my preference for natural subjects, usually local to me on the Fylde Coast or in the Lake District. My work depicts several recurring images which are important to me, trees, plants, dry stone walls ,weathered rocks, running water and derelict mills. For me they illustrate  power of nature, returning from mans eviction in an altered form,  unpredictable and destructive.
The fact that I initially trained as a potter on Manchester is perhaps where my love of natural process came from .I have a strong interest in chemistry and geology and frequently employ the use of natural minerals, I like to experiment with hand-made paint and varnish, beeswax, raw fabric, board, and found materials in my work, researching techniques of old masters and developing them into something new. I am interested in finding interesting surfaces to work from such as re -claimed items, fabric, wooden board, khadi paper and hand treated canvas. It is the surface which lends itself to the medium I use which can be mainly oil, watercolour or acrylic.
My recent work has been painted with egg tempera.
I mourn loss of craftsmanship, individuality and distancing from nature but this is not to say I am a technophobe or one who clings to the past, far from it. The use of technology in my painting is of equal importance to in my practice as I find the blend of ancient and modern quite fascinating and productive of effects which are fresh and new. I feel that one should not stay in the past but not forget it either, whilst exploring innovative new technologies.
Figures, both human and animal, have increasingly become part of my work.I have become involved in both a life and a portait group to enrich my skills .I have engaged in several private commissions
because of this work.  Nevertheless it is the landscape which  I find most fascinating and to which I constantly return.
